BHX vs. LHR

Or for those of you reading this who aren't travel agents, Birmingham airport vs. London Heathrow airport.
The reason for the post is that Birmingham International is making a determined bid to be seen as a viable alternative to Heathrow; this as Heathrow struggles with permission to build a third runway.
To help with this it's even started an advertising campaign on the London Underground!
Birmingham Airport chief executive Paul Kehoe said: "For too long policy makers have been infatuated with seeing airport expansion in the South East as the only solution to the problems facing Britain's aviation industry.
"Heathrow has been throwing its weight about trying to get a third runway back on the political agenda but the truth is that this reliance on a centralised airport system in the South East has made the industry too regional, uncompetitive and inflexible."

I flew out recently from Heathrow to Barcelona to catch a cruise on the NCL Epic. I didn't want to fly from Heathrow, living in the Midlands Birmingham International would have been much better for me, but the flights were a lot cheaper from Heathrow and this I think is the crux of the argument. A lot more airlines operate out of Heathrow than Birmingham.
I'm all in favour of this changing. I think having an International hub located in the middle of the Country makes much more sense tan somewhere down South.

What do you think? Does it make more sense to have the UK's busiest airport in the Midlands or do you think Heathrow should get the go-ahead for it's third runway?

Happy cruising.
