P&O - Truth or Urban Legend?

People gossip on cruises; it's what they do. Sitting around a dining table or relaxing in the bar afterwards, people love to gossip.
I'm no exception to this.
I was on a cruise back in October with some fellow travel agents and we all found ourselves around the bar after dinner swapping funny stories about cruises and cruisers. After a couple of anecdotes someone happened to say...........
"and then of course there's always the old one about leaving £10 on your dressing table with P&O".
As you can probably guess none of us had ever heard this story before so I thought I'd share it with you to see if you'd heard of it.

Apparently, if a single female passenger, travelling on her own with P&O, was to leave a £10 note on her dressing table, (the amount of money and inflation may well let you figure out how old this story is), it was an indication to her cabin steward for him to bring her some 'company' for the night, a volunteer being found from amongst the crew.
Now I don't know if this story is true or not, (and I'm certainly not going to put it to the test), but it's interesting how these rumours get started and then stick around for years isn't it?

Have you ever heard this one before, (or are you brave enough to admit having first hand knowledge of it)?
Or have you heard any other weird urban legends about cruising that you'd like to share here?

Happy cruising
