Can you scatter someones ashes from a cruise ship?

I know most of you who read my blog will be, by now, used to my tongue in cheek style, however this could be quite an emotive subject for some people so I'm going to try and keep it brief but respectful.
"Do cruise lines allow you to scatter someones ashes from a ship?"

The answer isn't what you might expect.
I thought it would be a flat no response from the cruise lines. Whilst I was sure they would want to help I had images of the ashes being caught by the wind and blowing into the balcony cabins below.
The answer is actually a lot simpler. The cruise lines don't have anything to do with it.
If a request is made to spread someones ashes at sea they will put you in touch with the purser of the ship in question who will check with the Captain. Sometimes the request will be granted, sometimes it won't be. The Captain, at your request, may even perform a small ceremony if you request it.
So the answer is it depends on the type of cruise you are doing and the Captain of that ship.

I hope this helps and if anyone has anymore information about this subject feel free to add it below to help others.

  1. James thanks for that I will post it up on the site, I too presumed the answer would be no for those exact reasons...for those looking to do it there are urns available that dissolve in the water which would prevent any of that blowning about business. Much appreciated Richard
