Well two out of three isn't bad. As you may have already guessed todays post is going to be about the slightly darker side of the cruise industry.
A famous luxury cruise brand has just announced that one of their ships has been chartered out for early 2013 to host a swingers themed cruise. (For the more innocent amongst you I'm not talking about dancing either).
It's an Azamara ship, the Quest, chartered for 16th May 2013, sailing from Valencia to Nice. If you are interested then you have to book it through a special swingers site, (you can find it here).
The reason for todays post however is because I'm quite surprised about the amount of back lash I've seen from Azamara passengers about this.
It would be fair to say that the vast majority of responses I've seen about this announcement has been horror that a luxury cruise liner like Azamara would consider doing this and that others were worried about booking onboard accidentally.
To set one worry to rest, you can't book onboard accidentally. The entire ship has been chartered so has to be booked through one particular website, you can't get onboard by mistake, no matter how hard you might protest to your other half!
As to the people that are surprised Azamara has done this, (one lady was talking about canceling her Azamara cruise entirely), it's actually quite common for a cruise line to charter out one of it's ships for private cruises. Yes a swingers cruise might be considered by some to be slightly more controversial than other themed cruises, (I know we don't have any plans to start offering them), but when you consider how many people have probably stopped in your cabin before you there's nothing that's going to happen on this swingers cruise that wont have already happened many times before. Most themed cruises of this nature tend to be naturist, nudist, sci fi etc, I remember reading once about a crossword themed cruise.
So come on people, lighten up. It's just a bit of fun between consenting adults and I'm sure much worse has gone on in your cabins before now.
Happy cruising
PS And no before anyone asks I haven't booked onboard myself!

Oh dear, don't agree with your philosophy on this and what about the crew,do they really have to be party to this?Yes,there will have been sexual activity in the cabins but read a dictionary definition of swingers and then think again.
ReplyDeleteJust DON'T go on the Azamara !!! This obviously is a cruise line in desperate and dire straits if it is willing to risk its reputation with loyal passengers who have normal to high sets of moral standards, and if it is suffering so badly in this recession, then other aspects of running this ship will suffer--does this policy apply to ALL Royal Carribean owned Cruise Lines. Will the Celebrity Cruise lines be next, I wonder, to offer 'Hedonistic Cruises'? And yes, I agree with the comments about the staff-how can a Cruise Company allow its staff to be subjected to be subjected to such debauchery-I am disgusted!
ReplyDeleteAs I said in the post, this is nothing to do with Azamara needing money, it's quite common for a cruise line to charted their ships out to different groups. You only have to google the term theme cruise to see the range available.
ReplyDeleteAs to the crew, I'm pretty sure all the 'swinging' will be done behind closed doors so they'll only have to join in if they want to.
These swinging cruises have been around for awhile now.I believe 2011 being the first for Azamara, now 2012/2013.They tend to sell out all staterooms within weeks, rather than months.Usually,7 nights costing the same as 14 nights. As I understand, most of the crew are aware of the nature of the cruise and the majority volunteer anyway. These type of cruisers tip well!
ReplyDeleteI would be willing to go on this cruise to report back to you about how it went and be objective in my reporting ( from a committed cruise goer who is not a real goer or swinger! I am quite facinated by this cruise and wonder what the staff think!!
