What can you do to guarantee the perfect holiday? What is the perfect holiday? What experiences are guaranteed to ruin a holiday or just put a black cloud over the whole trip? I’m sure we all have our own answers to those questions, infact there probably isn't any one right answer, but before you do try to answer them have a read of the following story and let me know if it changes your mind at all.
I was up North recently for my son, Harry’s, second birthday. We had taken him to see the Blackpool Illuminations along with all the amusements and fair rides etc. Rather stupidly of me, (going off past experiences), I left all the fine details up to my wife. It was supposed to be for a long weekend, Saturday morning into Monday night, which is when things started to go wrong.
The B&B she had booked was indeed for Saturday and Sunday night, leaving on the Monday, but the coach tickets were for a Friday arrival leaving on the Monday, (spot the deliberate mistake anyone?) Luckily when we got there the B&B owner had a spare room so we just had to pay for the extra night. Which is when we ran into problem number two. My wife had booked a family room with one double bed and one child’s bed, or at least she thought we had. Booking the room over the phone, (the excuse she came up with later was that it was a bad line on her mobile and she hadn’t thought to check her email invoice), she had requested a double bed and a single bed. What the B&B owner had heard was can we have a double bed and will there be room for a travel cot, (don’t ask, I’ve still no idea how it happened). Harry’s far too big to be sharing a bed with us now so being the gent that I am I offered to kip down on the floor. Problem number three, the B&B didn’t have any spare bedding, (what kind of B&B doesn’t have spare bedding?), so I had to pop into town and buy a sleeping bag where I spent the next three nights, not the most comfortable of holidays I’ve ever had! Then coming home we arrived at the coach station with a good fifteen minutes to spare to find a message posted on the wall stating that the coach would now be picking up everyone from the other end of the Golden Mile. One mad taxi dash through Blackpool traffic later, (nightmare) we just made it.
So all in all you could be forgiven into thinking that I’d had an awful time and would never want to do it again, but here’s the thing, I had a great time and can’t wait to go again for one very good reason.
It’s the little things that make a holiday.
Once you’ve got back you tend to forget all the problems and the things that were wrong and just remember the good things. And of the good things it tends to be the little touches that stand out the most.
The fact that your dinner waiter remembered your favourite drink every night.
The fact that your cabin steward kept making different towel animals each day for the kid’s amusement.
The fact that your husband fell off and made himself look a fool on the flow rider, (RCCL).
Or in my case the fact that your two year old son got scared by a big cardboard cut out clown and rather than crying and asking for his Mom he ran up and kicked it, (not very proud that he kicked it but I am very proud that he didn’t cry). We went on the Big Wheel and he laughed all the way around, and then begged to do it again and became absolutely obsessed with Blackpool tower, every time he saw it he would just stop and stare. Only little things you might think, but because he had such a good time so did we.
But that’s the funny thing about the little touches, they’re so easy to manufacture for someone. Now we can never be sure about what will stick out in someone’s mind but if you ask we can always try and tip the balance in your favour. We could arrange for flowers in your room at the start of a cruise, a nice bottle of wine to be delivered on your birthday. We could book a table for two for your dining or arrange for an upgrade on your room as a surprise. Obviously you could try and arrange all the above yourself but the point is why should you? It’s what we're here for. So next time your booking a cruise remember it’s the little things that make a difference and ask what we can do to make it that little bit extra special for you.
Happy Cruising.
