Avalon Vista

I've just got back from the ACE river cruise expo, (#rivercruiseexpo if you're on Twitter), and wanted to tell you about some of the ships I've seen. I had the amazing opportunity of seeing six different river cruise ships all owned and operated by six different cruise lines in the space of about three or four hours.
For that reason, (as we were being hurried around them a little), some of these posts about the different ships may not be as detailed as they always are and some of the pictures might not be the best in the world. They will however, (I hope), give you a taste of what each ship is like and let you judge the 'personality' of each ship.
First up is the Avalon Vista...........

As I had just got off Uniworlds SS. Antoinette, (you can read my review of her here), I suppose it was only natural that I found myself comparing the two. Whilst I had described the SS Antoinette has quite classical I found the Avalon Vista to be very modern and contemporary. The whole feel of the ship was different with much more modern lines.

The main lounge, whilst still very comfortable and elegant, was much more modern which I think is reflected in the colour choices of the furniture and the much more 'square' lines of the chairs.

This theme is continued in the main reception area. Again it's very nice and beautiful but it doesn't have the 'wow' factor the SS. Antoinette had. That being said however I did love the viewing window in the ceiling in place of a chandelier, (these pictures don't do it justice), which, if you went up to the top deck you could look down to the reception below.

One big thing in the Avalon Vistas favour was it's use of space. Although the ships themselves are about the same size the Avalons layout just made a bit more sense and flowed that little bit easier. These pictures you're looking at now are a quiet section at the back of the ship with wrap around windows, perfect for a quiet drink of an afternoon watching the river drift by.

The sun deck, (I felt bad calling it the fog deck). In the summer months I think those canopies will work really well in creating shade for those looking to enjoy the weather in the cool.

A giant chessboard on the Sun deck.

This is the window that looks down into the reception area.

The Avalon Vista didn't have a full swimming pool, (the designers preferring to use the space for other things), but it did have a whirlpool hot tub up on the sun deck to relax in.

You can't really make out what this is but the guide taking us around the ship told us it was a barbecue area to feed the guests up on the Sun deck during the nice weather - A great idea for anyone that just fancied a hot dog of an afternoon.

The gym or fitness centre as it's called. It's not the best equipped gym I've ever seen but it's nice to know it's there for those that do want it.

The main restaurant. Again you can see it's very elegant but again very contemporary, (I actually think I preferred this dining area to the SS Antoinette). You will be glad to hear however the food is of the exact same high quality.

And finally for anyone out there who looks to take their time in getting ready you'll be glad to know there is a hair dressing salon onboard if you fancied getting a new fancy hair cut before the Captains gala dinner.

So, in conclusion The Avalon Vista is another great 5* river cruise ship you can feel happy booking onboard. Very contemporary with great use of it's spaces onboard, what it loses in a sense of traditional formality it more than gains back in a very modern feel.

Happy, (river), cruising
