How many of you enjoy a steak dinner with all the trimmings?
I know it sounds a bit of a random question but I've done a couple of cruises in recent months and thought I'd let you all know about a trend I've noticed that seems to be creeping through the cruising world, (or so I've noticed after talking to other people).
The food on a cruise is almost always fantastic; indeed it's always been one of the big selling points for a cruise. However in times past if when you've sat down to dinner of an evening in the main restaurant and didn't like the look of the menu you could always ask your waiter to bring you a steak.
Unfortunately those days seem to be passing.
You may, (or may not), have noticed on your last few cruises that more and more cruise lines seem to be offering a speciality 'steak house' option that you need to pay a supplement for.
I've recently got back from a mini cruise on the P&O Oceana and of an evening they closed down half of the self service buffet restaurant and changed it into a steak house for the night, (which you had to pay a small cover charge for). However if you were dining in the main restaurant and asked for a steak, (because you didn't fancy anything else on the menu), you'd be told that it wasn't on the menu but you would be directed to trying the speciality option, even though in days gone by they would have been happy to provide this for you.
So what does this mean? Well as a trend it seems to be another cost cutting measure on the part of the cruise lines. Rather than providing it on the main menu, (free of charge), if you want to enjoy a steak whilst you're away you'll have to pay a speciality restaurant supplement.
Has anyone else noticed this?
When was the last time you saw steak on the menu of the main dining room?
Would you be happy with the cruise lines charging for steak if it meant they can keep offering cheap cruise prices or is this just one cost cutting measure too far?
Happy cruising
