Weird Place Names

I was booking some flights yesterday for some clients jetting off to Beijing. It was whilst searching for available airports that I noticed an island called Beef Island. Beef Island! Who thought that name up?
You can just imagine the conversation can’t you:

Oh look that’s a pretty island what shall we call it?
Well it’s got a cow on it shall we call it Beef Island?
Yeah go on, I can’t think of anything better.

It’s a small island in the British Virgin Islands, located just to the East of Tortola. There’s a bridge, called the Queen Elizabeth Bridge, linking the two. Beef Island is actually the site of Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, the main commercial airport that serves Tortola and the rest of the British Virgin Islands. Now that being the case you’d have though that they could have come up with a better name for it wouldn’t you?

Have any of you ever been there? Or has anyone ever been anywhere with even stranger names?Let me know here so we can try and make a list of the strangest place names around the globe.

Happy Cruising
