Dubrovnik in a day..................

O.K., so I’m continuing my series of blogs about un-missable tourist destinations on the different ports of call we at cruise.co.uk send you all too. Again, bear in mind this is aimed at people who have never visited these ports before and it’s all based on my personal opinions and my favourite sites anyway. If you feel I’ve missed something important out or disagree please make a comment below to help other cruisers make up their minds.
So on to business, today I'll be looking at Dubrovnik.

The Big Fountain of Ononfrio

I love this name. The Big Fountain. It does exactly what it says on the tin. On of the best known and most loved features by residents of Dubrovnik, it was built in 1438-1444 by the architect Ononfrio De La Cava. Originally designed with two storeys, it lost its second storey in the big earthquake of 1667 when most of the rest of Dubrovnik was also heavily damaged. It was originally part of the cities water supply system and was designed to move water from the Dubrovacka River.

The City Walls

The City Walls, I have always thought, are one of Dubrovniks most striking features. Built in the 10th century and modified in the 13th and 14th, parts of the walls are 19ft thick, providing a very solid defence against invaders. The total length of Dubrovniks walls is 6390ft and make a great afternoon stroll in the sunshine. They provide amazing views of the Adriatic on one side and the old town centre on the other.

The Square of Loggia

The Square of Loggia is the life blood of activity and entertainment in Dubrovnik. Always bustling, it is the gathering point for residents and visitors alike, with features such as Orlandos column, (not the guy out of Lord of the Rings), making perfect gathering/meeting points for visitors.

Fort of St. John

Located on the Eastern edge of the old town, this imposing structure was once the centre of defence for Dubrovnik. In these, more peaceful days it has now been modified and renovated to hold more modern attractions. The upper area holds the Maritime museum of Dubrovnik, a must see for anyone sailing to Dubrovnik. The lower area holds the Aquarium of Dubrovnik. An excellent destination for both children and adults it is particularly noted for its large collection of sea horses.

Hope this helps, and again if you disagree or prefer other sites let everyone know here, it can only help people make up their minds.

Happy Cruising
