I was talking to a past passenger recently about an Alaskan cruise he wanted to book. He wanted to cruise in 2012 but also had several strict requirements that the cruise had to include. After adding a couple of nights to his cruise in a hotel at the start and end of the holiday we managed to include everything that he wanted.
It was whilst researching his requirements however that I came across some interesting facts and figures about Alaska that, (being the geek I am), I couldn't resist sharing with you........
1. Alaska is the least densely populated American state with approximately half of it's residents living in the Anchorage area.
2. Alaska was originally purchased from the Russian Empire in 1867 for just $7.2 million, (that's about $113 million in todays terms).
3. Here's one for all you cruising fans out there - Alaska's coast line is longer than the entire combined coast line of all the other U.S states combined. Plenty of room for lots of shore excursions!
4. Alaska is the only non-contigous state on continental North America. That means it's not connected to any other U.S states. Like Hawaii it's completley seperate, in this case it's seperated from the rest of the U.S by Canada.
5. Alaska is the largest state in the U.S, (586,412 sq miles). That's over twice the size of Texas, the next largest state.
Happy cruising
