If you've been looking at booking a Fred Olsens cruise for this year, now's the time to get it done. Due to the continuing rise in the cost of fuel Fred Olsens, from the 19th January 2011 they will be changing their policy on fuel supplements. If you're looking to make a saving, take some advice and book before then.
Rather than continuing to operate on their old system of a flat rate fuel supplement per person, they will now be charging a percentage of the un-discounted cruise fare.
This means that if you book after the 19th January you will be charged an extra 5.5% per person as a fuel supplement - meaning that people in higher grade cabins will be paying more for fuel than the people in the lower grade cabins.
I can see the sense in this a little as someone in a big suite would probably use a little more fuel than someone in an inside cabin, but how fair is it that someone in an outside cabin pay more for fuel than the person in an inside cabin when the only difference in their room is a window?
What do you think?
Fred Olsens have commented to the fact that if the price of Brent Crude oil drops back below the price of £45 a barrel or below average costs across the month prior to departure, then the fuel cost supplement will be refunded back to the passenger in the form of On Board Credit.
It seems a lot of cruise lines are charging for fuel supplements at the moment, but I still think a 5.5% charge seems high - My best advice? If you're looking to book a Fred Olsen cruise, do it quick!
Happy Cruising.
