Celebrity Cruises are introducing self-guided art tours on the i-Pad. An addition to the 'Celebrity Life' series of entertainment and enrichment activities that I’ve blogged on before, the i-Pads on each Solstice class ship house deck plans with select artworks flagged on every level.
A user touches the screen to get more details on a work of art. In addition to the art tour application, the i-Pads present digital versions of each Solstice vessel’s in-stateroom art catalogues.
Celebrity placed more than 14,000 original artworks on its three Solstice ships, including site-specific or commissioned works such as the living trees in enormous vases suspended within the Grand Foyers.
The i-Pad art tours will be available on Celebrity Solstice beginning Sunday, and on Celebrity Eclipse and Celebrity Equinox beginning Aug. 21. The tours are in English, and also will be offered in Spanish by the end of the year. Celebrity will add German and French versions in 2011.
Whilst this is quite a ‘funky’ way to view the art on board, is this just another way of persuading cruisers to buy at the on board art auctions.
What do you think?
Will this make you more likely to buy the artwork?
Have you ever bought art pieces onboard before?
Let me know your opinions on onboard art are here.
Happy cruising
