Cruising to Cagliari?

O.K., so here’s another update on my series of blogs about un-missable tourist destinations on the different ports of call we at cruise.co.uk send you all too. Again, bear in mind this is aimed at people who have never visited these ports before and it’s all based on my personal opinions and my favourite sites anyway. If you feel I’ve missed something important out or disagree with a point I've made please make a comment below to help other cruisers make up their minds.

Amphitheater

The Amphitheater is one of the chief tourist attractions in Cagliari. The Amphitheater was constructed during the 2nd century. Nowadays lyrical and theatrical shows are held at the Cagliari Amphitheater. The Amphitheater was built out of a rock depression. The hole which you would discover in the middle of the arena was actually dug on the rock. The Amphitheater is really one of the wonders located in the city of Cagliari and demands one visit, at the very least. Unfortunately though you will be about 2000 years late for any gladiatorial games, ah well, you can’t have everything.

Cathedral of Santa Maria

The Cathedral of Santa Maria was constructed during the 13th century by the Pisans. The Cathedral which you see now in Cagliari, though, is not exactly the one which was built in the 13th century. The structure has gone through numerous renovation activities over the years. The art collections in the Cathedral include Guglielmo's Pulpit, 15th and 16th century paintings and sculptures, etc. All these factors necessitate a visit to the Cathedral for all art fans.

National Archaeological Museum
The National Archaeological Museum is also a major place included in the list of tourist attractions in Cagliari. The National Archaeological Museum consists of relics which belong to the period of Nuragic civilization. The museum also boasts of artefacts obtained from various parts of the country Italy. Some of the places in Italy from where the articles have been sourced include Marmilla, Montiferru, Oristanese, Trexenta, etc. The museum also holds artefacts dating back to the Phoenician and Roman period. Well worth a visit for anyone interested in ancient history.

Parco dei sette Fratelli
The wildlife park holds animals like the Sardinian deer and wild boars along with numerous examples of indigenous Italian flora. You could also be lucky enough to view the royal eagle, which has been known to nest at this park. The park is home to about 115 species of vertebrates like reptiles, mammals, birds, etc. The Parco dei sette Fratelli is definitely one of the important tourist attractions in Cagliari for nature lovers.

Cagliari is an incredibaly old city, with something to do for everyone, well worth getting off the ship for I think.

Happy Cruising
