One of my past passengers recentley just came back from a cruise on Hurtigruten, (a cruise line specalising in cruises above the Northern circle for anyone who hasn't read my previous blogs on this cruise line), and they wrote this review when they returned which they have asked me to share with you.
If anyone else has ever sailed with Hurtigruten you'll have to let me know if their comments match up with your experiences. Do you agree with them? Or have you anything further to add for anyone thinking of booking a Hurtigruten cruise?
If you wish to read the other posts I have written about Hurtigruten, you will find the word Hurtigruten highlighted in blue at the botton of this post. If you click this it will load up all the old posts about them.
“Norway was great - we did manage to see the lights - not fantastic but enough for us. They were quite eerie and I can understand how some people can get 'obsessed' about them - apparently there are those who think they prolong your life if you see them - time will tell!
The country is quite beautiful - obviously it was very cold when we were there, but the scenery was spectacular. When we left Kirkenes to fly home, it was minus 20 and the sea was frozen.
The accommodation on the boat was ok, but basic - cabins are small with single beds, but are ensuite. We were given the disabled accommodation (don't know why) which gave us more space. I think some of the newer ships from the fleet also have suites. The food was good, but on our boat the evening meal was set, apart from the first and last nights, when there was a buffet, which was excellent. Breakfasts were a buffet, and again were very good. Staff polite and helpful - there are no expectations re tips etc, unless you want to.
We would have liked longer at some of the main stops - Trondheim, Truso and so on - as we didn't think there was enough time to explore. We're talking about returning but using the train - tho' it's just talk at the moment.
It is quite expensive, even on the ship - there was a cafe that served food & drink 24 hours. No tea/coffee making facilities in the cabins, but for 200 krona you could have your own cup and refill with tea/coffee as often as you wanted.
We didn't do many trips, but we really enjoyed the one to the North Cape - following a snow plough! There's not much there, but there was a very good visitor centre, cafe etc.”
Hope this is of help
