Will the British market say no?

Unless you're a dedicated cruiser until a couple of years ago you probably hadn't ever heard of MSC. They're an Italian cruise line that have grown very large over the last few years. Currently they're trying to break into the UK market by offering cruises from Southampton onboard the MSC Opera.

Now I'm a big fan of MSC, I think they've got some gorgeous ships with some great itinerary's and the fact that kids almost always sail free has to be a huge bonus. However they've had a bit of an uphill struggle convincing British passengers to sail with them as being an Italian cruise line the atmosphere onboard isn't what a lot of Brits expect from a cruise.
With announcements in Italian, (being followed by English), lots of Italian themed menus and multi-lingual entertainment onboard a lot of the more traditional element of cruise passengers have preferred to stick with the likes of P&O or RCCL.
They have over the last year or two though been making some headway with UK passengers, (sailings out of Southampton have helped), but what I'm wondering is how badly will Saturdays news from the MSC Opera set MSC back in regards to their UK market share.

For those of you who hadn't heard the MSC Opera suffered a power failure on Saturday night to such an extent that now the 2000 plus guests onboard are all being flown home. There has been reports on various cruise forums of lights not working and toilets not flushing.
Tug vessels have had to be sent out to bring the vessel back to dock where it's engines will have to undergo major repair.
All the guests were in the process of being flown home from Stockholm yesterday.
In MSCs defence sometimes these things do happen aboard a cruise vessel, there isn't always a lot you can do to help it and they have offered all their guest a future cruise voucher for the full value of their cruise to be used by December 2012, (personally I would have just wanted a full cash refund but at least they're offering something).
So what do you all think? Is this setback going to prove too much for UK guests or would you still be happy to book onboard the MSC Opera after this?
Let me know what you think here.

Happy cruising

  1. Hello James,
We sailed back from Brazil some five years ago on Opera and it was a tatty old thing then!
Just before last Christmas we got what we thought was a cheap deal on MSC Splendida from Girona to Alexandria and the med. Although the ship is stunning (swarovski crystal staircase) etc, the whole experience left a lot to be desired, in fact as we brits boarded the coach to take us to Girona airport on our return everyone gave a cheer.
I have never been on a cruise where I was glad to be going home and believe me we have been on some old ships in our time.
MSC seem to be missing the point, giving people a nice ship is not the way to provide a good holiday experience it takes a lot more effort to make the time on board pleasurable and get customers coming back.
